Well the United States National Archives is saying 2 to 5 years!!!

I’m sure everyone with a DVD collection rammed into their homes or those personal photos and video of loved ones stored safely will be concerned by this report.

Firstly Mass-duplicated DVDs are made using an entirely different process known as “glass mastering.” so its only DVDs created on personal computers that last only a few years.

When information burned on users DVDs began to disappear, manufacturers assumed the problem was due to the silver reflective back becoming tarnished, so Gold DVDs were introduced because gold doesn’t tarnish. Now the Gold DVDs are degrading as fast as the silver ones. The problem turned out to be the fading of the laser-sensitive ink in the sandwich layer between the clear plastic and the reflective surface.

So whats next? Well it seems we can now have our data literally written in stone and last forever!

Cranberry have created a “DiamonDisc” this is process where the image is written in a synthetic stone disc. this disc unlike other DVD’s you purchase has no dyes or reflective coating that can degrade over time.

Process is simple you sign up with Cranberry, upload your files, Cranberry etch them into the disc then post it to you.

Have a look Carnberry’s other media backup failure points your be surprised at what is potentially still the best!

Microsoft today announced the availability of the Windows Azure platform at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC). In his opening keynote address, Ray Ozzie, chief software architect at Microsoft, described Windows Azure and SQL Azure as core elements of the company’s cloud services strategy. The company also announced a set of new Windows Azure features, Windows Server capabilities, and marketplace offerings that will make it easier for developers to build profitable businesses from their Microsoft-based solutions.

What is Windows Azure? for more information and an introductory video

“Customers want choice and flexibility in how they develop and deploy applications,” Ozzie said. “We’re moving into an era of solutions that are experienced by users across PCs, phones and the Web, and that are delivered from datacenters we refer to as private clouds and public clouds. Built specifically for this era of cloud computing, Windows Azure and SQL Azure will give developers what they need to build great applications and profitable businesses.”

In his keynote address, Ozzie described the company’s “three screens and a cloud” vision, where software experiences are seamlessly delivered across PCs, phones and TVs, all connected by cloud-based services. Underscoring the IT industry’s shift toward a hybrid approach of online services combined with on-premises software, Ozzie described the programming model for a powerful new generation of applications for both businesses and consumers, enabled by new Microsoft development tools and technologies. He also demonstrated customer and partner commitment to Microsoft’s development platform with Seesmic, WordPress and Cheezburger Network.

Today’s mobile workforce is increasing the demand on IT to provide remote access to resources. However, managing remote computers is an ongoing challenge, with low wide area network (WAN) bandwidth and sporadic connection and re-connection processes interfering with lengthier desktop management tasks such as Group Policy changes and up-to-date patching.

Windows Server 2008 R2 introduces a new type of connectivity called DirectAccess This is a powerful way for remote users to seamlessly access corporate resources without requiring a VPN connection and client software.

Using technologies that is shipped in Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has added simple management wizards that enable administrators to configure SSTP and IPv6 across both R2 and Windows 7 clients to enable the basic DirectAccess connection

With DirectAccess, every user is considered remote all of the time. Users are no longer required to distinguish between local and remote connections. DirectAccess handles all of these distinctions in the background. IT professionals retain precise access control and full perimeter security, helping to ease both desktop security and management headaches on both sides of the connection.
